Tourism

The activity of traveling for pleasure.

This is two buildings now. The Sydney Modern Project opened a second one on 3 December 2022, close to doubling the exhibition space, and the Yiribana Gallery of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art moved into its ground floor. The buildings were named in the Sydney language only in April 2024, and the gallery joined the State Heritage Register only in November 2024.

There is no replica called Discovery here and never has been, and the museum has two replicas rather than one — the second is Duyfken, of the Dutch ship that reached Australia in 1606. HMAS Vampire is a destroyer of 1959, not a wartime ship; the vessel that fought the Second World War is Krait. The tall ship alongside belongs to the Sydney Heritage Fleet, and none of the vessels has wheelchair access.

Why the skyscraper was worked out here, the race around 1930 that produced most of the famous ones, and an honest comparison of the five observation decks now competing — including which is the only one that can give you the view everyone recognises, and which one leaves out the building you are standing on.

Australia's first museum marks two hundred years on 30 March 2027, with a programme already announced. General admission has been free to everyone, with no residency condition, since 28 November 2020, after the fifteen-month Project Discover rebuild. Surviving Australia was torn out and reopened in December 2025, and the Sydney funnel-web was found in 2025 to be three species rather than one.

An entirely constructed nineteenth-century landscape in the middle of Manhattan, and the village that was cleared to build it. What to see in each third of the park, the change in 2018 that made it quieter, the trick with the lamp posts for working out where you are, and the Egyptian obelisk whose twin stands on the Thames.

Never the longest arch span in the world — the Bayonne Bridge opened four months earlier and longer — and who designed it was disputed in Bradfield's and Freeman's own lifetimes and never settled. It is a single through arch, not a double one, with the deck hung inside it rather than running beneath. The cycleway ramp that replaced fifty-five stairs opened in January 2026.

Port Jackson and Sydney Harbour are the same water — the port and transport agencies write the two names interchangeably. Fort Denison is closed to visitors throughout 2026, Transport for NSW does not publish which Circular Quay wharf most ferries leave from, and only about half the harbour's monitored swimming spots reach the grade that nearly all ocean beaches manage.

The Roeblings and the bridge they nearly died building, the waterfront parks with the best free view of Manhattan, the park Olmsted and Vaux thought better than Central Park, a Victorian garden cemetery with wild parakeets in the gate, and Coney Island. Plus the ferry, which beats the subway for getting there.

Jørn Utzon resigned in February 1966 and never returned to Australia, so the architect never saw the finished building — the 1999 re-engagement produced written design principles from Denmark, not a homecoming. The shells are tiled concrete rather than granite, the tiles are not self-cleaning, and 496 state lotteries paid the bill.

Four properties is not the set — the custodian runs twelve places open to the public. It is also a different custodian: the Historic Houses Trust was dissolved at the end of 2022 rather than renamed, and its houses passed to Museums of History NSW. Hyde Park Barracks is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and entry is now free across the whole portfolio.

How New York got here: the Dutch trading post still visible in the street plan of Lower Manhattan, the Erie Canal that made it the dominant Atlantic port, Ellis Island, the grid, the Harlem Renaissance, hip hop in the Bronx, Stonewall, the near-bankruptcy of the 1970s, and the memorial that now occupies the towers' footprints.
