Tourism

The activity of traveling for pleasure.

The park was Whitfield Barracks, a military area from 1864, handed over in 1967 and redeveloped from 1970, with four blocks surviving. Bird Lake holds over 150 birds of about five species, none of them local, and the totem pole's Canadian provenance cannot be verified.

The Tian Tan Buddha is 26.4 m to the top of the figure and 34 m including its throne and base. Po Lin Monastery was founded in 1906 and renamed in 1924. Tai O is on Lantau, not west of it. And the Wisdom Path has been closed for refurbishment since June 2025.

No government source publishes a summit elevation for Victoria Peak; the published figures are the weather station at 406 m, the tram's upper terminus at 396 m and Sky Terrace 428. The Peak Tram is a funicular, not an aerial cableway, and reopened on 27 August 2022 after fourteen months closed, with capacity raised from 120 to 210.

The Stone Forest in Yunnan is not made of stalagmites but of karst pinnacles, dissolved out of Palaeozoic limestone in two phases — buried groundwater dissolution below, rainwater fluting above. It has been part of the South China Karst World Heritage property since 2007 and is number 80 in the International Union of Geological Sciences' First 100 Geological Heritage Sites. It is not one of the seven natural wonders of the world, a list no official body maintains.

The Three Gorges Dam was accepted as complete on 1 November 2020 and has generated since 2003, so accounts of construction in progress are three decades out of date. It is the largest hydroelectric plant in the world at 22,500 megawatts, but supplies about one per cent of China's electricity rather than four. Its reservoir runs 662 kilometres, displaced more than 1.2 million people and inundated around 1,300 archaeological sites. The gorges are on China's tentative list, not the World Heritage List.

The hanging coffins of the Yangtze gorges are attributed by the only peer-reviewed genomic study to the Bo rather than the Ba, and the surviving 131 coffins in Zigui County are dated to the Tang dynasty, around twelve hundred years old, not four thousand. The earliest securely dated hanging coffins anywhere are about 3,400 years old and lie in coastal Fujian. The belief that a higher coffin was better for the dead is recorded in a Yuan-dynasty account.

The Yangtze rises in the Tanggula Mountains of Qinghai and runs 6,300 kilometres to the East China Sea. Its basin covers eleven provincial-level divisions under the Yangtze River Protection Law, not six provinces. The rapids and whirlpools of Xiling Gorge were drowned by the Three Gorges reservoir two decades ago, and four of the five animals the river is known for are now extinct, extinct in the wild or critically endangered.

Shanghai stands on the Huangpu, not the Yangtze — though the municipality's northern boundary is the Yangtze estuary. It is a city of 24.85 million, the world's busiest container port for sixteen consecutive years, and sixth among global financial centres. The Bund's name comes from Hindi and Urdu rather than German, and three features older accounts list as separate sights are all inside Yu Garden.

Macao is a Chinese Special Administrative Region, not a city of Portugal, and the handover was on 20 December 1999. The Historic Centre of Macao has been a World Heritage site since 2005, and the Ruins of St Paul's, St Augustine's Church and the Guia fortress are all components of it. The territory is a peninsula plus Taipa and Coloane joined by reclamation, and about two-thirds of its land did not exist a century ago. Gaming tax supplied around 85 per cent of government revenue in early 2026.

Hangzhou has three World Heritage properties — the West Lake cultural landscape of 2011, the Grand Canal of 2014 and the Liangzhu city ruins of 2019 — and a past of over 2,200 years as a county, with two separate turns as a capital under the Wuyue kingdom and the Southern Song. The Six Harmonies Pagoda dates from around 970 rather than the fifth century, and Lingyin Temple requires compulsory advance booking.

No state recognises Tibet as sovereign, and the exile administration in India asks for autonomy within China rather than independence. Two practical points older accounts miss: a permit beyond a Chinese visa is required and must be arranged through an agent in China, with no independent travel; and Lhasa stands at about 3,650 metres, in the band where guidance warns against gaining altitude as fast as a flight there does.

Four of the mountains in older accounts are members of the Five Great Mountains of China, a group China submitted to UNESCO's tentative list in 2008; the fifth, Huashan, is the highest and is usually left out. Almost every height in circulation needed correcting, and Songshan's summit is Liantian Peak rather than Junji. Mount Taishan has been World Heritage since 1987 and Songshan enters the list through the Historic Monuments of Dengfeng in 2010, while Huashan is not inscribed at all.
