Top Dog Breeds for Young Families

Choosing a dog to add to your family is a personal choice. However, knowing what dog breeds other families with young children have chosen can make the choice a little easier. Here are some of the breeds most experts and families recommend, in no particular order.

  • Collies – This breed of dog seems to be the quintessential choice for families with children because of the television show “Lassie.” They are loyal, intelligent and patient.
  • Pembroke Welsh corgis – Although they can weigh up to 25 pounds, they are a popular pet with families who have children over six years old. They can be domineering and they require daily exercise.
  • Irish setters – This breed is another well-known family pet. They are eager to please and loving to their families, although they can get quite large and are very active.
  • Schnauzers – If you’re willing to take the time to exercise and groom this breed, they can make excellent pets. They are eager to please and keep the family safe. They love being with their people and come in three different sizes for you to choose from.
  • Labrador retrievers – Does your family love spending time near the water? The Lab might be the perfect choice for you. They have plenty of energy and are naturally protective. They are loyal and dedicated to the family who owns them.
  • West Highland terriers – Playful and loveable, this little dog makes a good watch dog for your family. They do require exercise and daily grooming to keep them happy. They are a better choice for families with children over ten as they can be intolerant of accidents children are liable to have.
  • Golden retrievers – This is considered to be an excellent choice for families who spend a good deal of time outdoors. They are loyal to their families and make great pets even though they are on the large side.
  • Poodles – The poodle has long been the choice of dog lovers. They are intelligent, friendly and thrive on their family’s attention. They can be found in a variety of colors and three different sizes. They do not shed as much as other dogs.
  • Shih tzus – These dogs are bred as companions. Originally they were bred for royalty but they can now be chosen as a pet for your family. The dog does take some extra care to keep them well-groomed, but they love nothing more than playing with children.

Even though this list is not exhaustive, you can easily find one of these top dog breeds for young families. You may also want to consider going to a shelter and rescuing a ‘mutt’ that needs a loving home. You may be surprised to find mixed breeds to be the best choice for your family.
