Cycle Fit

You Don’t Have to Be A Cycling Star

Anyone can take a look at any of the cycling events winners and know that they are in fabulous shape. In fact, their aerobic and cardiovascular health is probably one of the best in the world. But you don’t have to be one of them to reap the benefits of cycling. You don’t have to get on an ultra light bike and ride over mountains. You simply have to pedal.

Cycling improves your cardio health. Cycling is an aerobic activity and it’s really easy on your joints. Some people cannot run but want to enjoy exercise outside. Cycling is a fantastic solution.

Cycling also helps you sculpt fantastic legs and gluteus muscles. Cycling is essentially the peddling motion repeated over and over again. It’s like repetitions in weightlifting. And the weight you “lift” depends on the gear you put your bike in.

Mentally, cycling offers many of the same benefits that running or other outdoor sports offer. It’s relaxing and a great stress reliever. Additionally, the fresh air and sunshine can turn even the worst mood into joy.

But What About Cycling Gear?

There are essentially three types of bikes some people really get into cycling and own several different bikes but you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy cycling.

Mountain biking. Mountain bikes are bikes that are designed to go off road. They have a larger frame and tires that accommodate trails. They generally come with a suspension on the front so you don’t have a hard impact when you go over bumps and this is called a “hardtail” because you don’t have a shock on the back.

The other type of mountain bike is a full suspension mountain bike and that has a shock on the back too. Full suspension bikes are more expensive and are designed for really rugged trails. If you’re new to mountain biking a hardtail is sufficient.

Road Cycling. The other type of bike you may want to consider is a road bike. This is what Lance rides. It’s a lightweight bike that has tires designed to ride quickly on the road. Again, these bikes don’t have to cost a fortune and you can get a great deal at a used bike store.

Finally, the third main type of bike is a comfort or fitness bike. They’re also sometimes called a hybrid. These types of bikes position the rider so they sit more upright and many of them are good for both trails and the road.

In addition to a bike, you need a helmet and you may want padded bike shorts to protect your rear end. There are also cycling specific shoes but you don’t have to invest in these. Regular tennis shoes are fine in the beginning. Before you hit the road make sure you’re familiar with safety rules.

Cycling is great fun and it’s also great fitness. Plot a route, hop on your bike and start peddling. You’ll be glad you did.
