Since your body rebuilds itself while you’re asleep, getting a good night’s sleep is absolutely imperative. That’s why a good mattress is so important. It will provide the support you need so you don’t wake up with back pain or muscle fatigue.

Finding the best mattress for you may take a little bit of time. You might be lucky enough to find the right one right off the bat, but most likely you’ll have to do a little bit of research. Here’s what to look for when searching for a new mattress:

  • Type of mattress - What type of mattress do you prefer? You can get foam, water, air or innerspring mattresses. Look for a mattress which offers you the level of support you need and which will be the most comfortable to sleep on.
  • Foundation - Box springs, the most well-known foundation, are used to extend the life of the mattress. Not having a foundation, or using a foundation that is broken down, will greatly affect how well the mattress supports you. It can also lead to your mattress breaking down quicker than it might with proper foundation.
  • Comfort – You won’t know how comfortable a mattress is if you buy it without trying it. Go to the furniture or bed store, take off your shoes, and climb on. Position yourself as you would if you were going to sleep at night. Then turn over from one side to the other to see how the mattress feels. Does it support you while you’re lying on your side? Do you feel like you’re supported lying on your back? Have your partner, if you have one, get on the bed with you. How much does the bed shift around when they move?
  • Durability – What type of warranty does the manufacturer give for the mattress you’re interested in? Most mattresses and box springs will have information about how long they’ll last - normally between eight and ten years. When choosing a mattress, it would be better not to just look at price. Even if a mattress set is inexpensive, if it has to be replaced in a few years, you’re not really saving anything.
  • Support – People are different, so their need for support won’t be the same. Just because a mattress is firm doesn’t mean it will support you in the best way possible. In fact, if your spine isn’t supported properly you’ll wake up feeling tired and possibly in pain.
